Laser Micromachining of Transparent Dielectrics – Glass and Quartz Using Nano Short Pulsed Nd: YVO4 Laser Harmonics
Glass, Quartz, and Silicon are made out of sand grains consisting of Silica, SiO2. Silicon and Glass are two basic building blocks which go hand-in-hand in the fabrication of optoelectronics and microelectronics device for MEMS and Biomedical microdevice applications such as charge coupled device, lab-on-a-chip, microsensors, microfluidic arrays, PV solar cells etc. (more...)

JLA Editor's Pick: Investigation of the Piercing Process in Laser Cutting of Stainless Steel
This paper investigates the laser piercing process which precedes nearly every laser cutting operation. The two most important aspects of the piercing process are: (a) How long does it take to pierce the material? and (b) How wide is the pierced hole? If the hole is no wider than the cut line, the material can be pierced on the line to be cut. In this paper, 10 mm thick stainless steel was pierced by a multikilowatt fiber laser to compare efficiency and quality when piercing with a continuous wave output and a selected range of power modulation parameters. (more...)

LAM and LME 2018

Looking ahead to 2018, LIA's Laser Additive Manufacturing Conference (LAM®) and Lasers for Manufacturing Event (LME®) will be co-located at the Renaissance Schaumburg Convention Center in Schaumburg, IL from March 27–29.

LAM, which runs on the 27th and 28th, will highlight the additive manufacturing process from design to application. Showcasing on the 28th and 29th, LME exhibitors will feature the latest in laser technology, allowing attendees to network with the industry’s elite and find solutions to current and future manufacturing needs.

Co-located with LAM and LME will be DigiFab Con, produced by Fab Lab Hub, which will explore how digital fabrication, like 3D Printing, laser cutting and CAD design, is changing the world. Attendees will see exciting technologies like 3D Printing, laser cutting, robotics and artificial intelligence, and have the opportunity to meet with the visionaries, educators and innovators utilizing these technologies to change the world.
