Real-time monitoring of laser cladding for measuring the clad geometry provides essential signals for a closed-loop control system utilized in the process. In addition, the measurement can be used in the analysis of the clad quality and the process. In general, the real-time monitoring of laser cladding is subject to numerous uncertainties such that the development of a detector utilized in various process statuses is a challenging task.
In ICALEO 2004, a CCD-based optical detector was introduced, which was used in the measuring of a single track laser cladding. In this paper, the expansion of the detector to multi-track laser cladding will be discussed. A new algorithm is developed to extract the required clad geometry (i.e., clad height and width) from the melt pool images grabbed by three CCD-based optical detectors in which the influence of the melt pool blocking by the adjacent track is taken into account. Experimental results will be presented to verify the performance of the detector.
