Air-clad fibre lasers are an increasingly preferred alternative to polymer clad double clad lasers for high power laser operation. The overall thermal resistance and larger NA possible allow more efficient and higher power operations. The ability to incorporate all-fibre components is especially attractive. In this paper we review developments of these lasers at the Optical Fibre Technology Centre.
