Procedures have been developed for Hybrid Laser Arc Welding (HLAW) of HSLA-80 and approved by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for use in the construction of naval combatant vessels built under Naval Vessel Rules (NVR). This paper discusses problems encountered and solutions generated during the development sequence, especially in achieving satisfactory Charpy V-Notch (CVN) impact properties. Identification of essential variables and establishment of tolerances for these variables is treated. These results generated the first US qualification of HLAW for application to high-yield structural steels used in shipbuilding.
This abstract was prepared by the Navy Metalworking Center, operated by Concurrent Technologies Corporation, under Contract No. N00014-06-D-0048 to the Office of Naval Research as part of the Navy ManTech Program. Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited.
