Recently high-power, high-quality disk lasers are developed to produce deep penetration welds. This study was carried out to produce deep-penetration weld beads and to interpret the effect of combined beams on welding results and phenomena by using high power disk lasers of 10 kW and 16 kW. It was consequently confirmed that twin spots welding with the leading 16 kW laser exerted a better effect on weld penetration than the welding results with the twin spots of 10 kW laser leading or 10 kW and 16 kW tandem spots. Nevertheless, it was revealed that welding with a single laser beam was most effective to produce in terms of the production of the deepest weld penetration because of lower laser power density with two spots. These welding phenomena of plume and melt ejection, and melt flows in the molten pool were elucidated by observing with high speed video and X-ray transmission real-time observation.
