Supersonic Laser Deposition (SLD) has demonstrated the ability to deposit a range of metal coatings on a wide range of substrates, including Ti, stainless steels, copper, Al, and Ni. The SLD principle is based on Cold Spray (CS) technology although the deposition velocities employed by SLD can be significantly lower than those required for effective bonding in CS applications. The addition of laser heat energy permits a change in the thermodynamic experience of impacting particles, thereby offering a greater opportunity for metallurgical bonding at lower velocities compared to CS process technology. The work reported here demonstrates the ability of the SLD process to deliver hard facing materials to engineering surfaces. Stellite 6. And has been deposited on mild steel over a range of process parameters, determining the appropriate target temperatures and traverse rates for coating deposition. Coating properties were examined to determine wear rate and hardness. Coating morphology was examined through optical microscopy, SEM and x-ray diffraction. The results have showm that SLD is capable of depositing effective hard-facing materials such as Setllite-6, with coating properties comparing well with laser clad counterparts.
