Textures on the surface of solar glass have the quality to improve the performance of itself and the further positive effect on the photovoltaics module. However, glass substrates cannot be etched directly by 1064 nm pulsed laser due to they are transparent to 1064 nm laser irradiation. Based on the principle of melting removing and heat conductive medium, a laser induced backside etching technique and corresponding device were demonstrated respectively. By placing the solar glass contact with solid medium and irradiation of a 1064 nm pulsed fiber laser, patterns with the average depth of 30um and space resolution of 20 lp have been achieved on the downside of the glass. Moreover, aluminum oxide ceramics and polish powder are applied as different mediums in the etching. Results shows that, with a lower laser threshold fluence, laser induced backside etching procedure can be realized in two heat conduction mediums, and The etched surface structures on glass have well defined edges and low surface roughness values of down to 0.6um.
