ANSI Z136.1

As the parent document of the Z136 series of laser safety standards, the Z136.1 is the foundation of laser safety programs for industry, military, research and development (labs), and higher education (universities).

Provides guidance for individuals who work with high power Class 3B and Class 4 lasers and laser systems, for example:

• Industrial users who cut metals and ceramics (Manufacturers of automobiles, computers, medical devices, etc.)
• Industrial workers who weld using lasers
• Those utilizing other laser material applications include laser engraving, drilling, and ablation

It provides a practical means for establishing a laser safety program to protect the employer, facility, and personnel from:

• Beam Hazards:
  • Potential injury to the eye
  • Potential injury to the skin
• Non-Beam Hazards:
  • Electrocution
  • Fire
  • Exposure to air contaminants, hazardous gases, laser dyes and solvents

Through engineering, administrative, and procedural controls, including:

• Protective Housing
• Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
• Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs)
• Warning signs and labels requirements

The Z136.1 defines:

• Duties and responsibilities of the LSO
• Laser and laser systems hazard classifications
