North Salinas High School Salinas, CA 93906, U.S.A.Laser light is an instant attention‐getter in the classroom; thus any activity which uses the laser as an instructional tool is sure to enhance student motivation. This paper discusses two demonstrations and one experiment involving laser applications that the author has found to be particularly beneficial in terms of (1) instructional effectiveness and (2) arousing the interest of high school physics students. Brief descriptions follow. Refraction through lenses can be nicely illustrated by splitting laser light into several parallel beams and directing them through a fish tank filled with a scatt...

Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Department of Otolaryngology, Nashville, TennesseeSince the discovery of the laser in 1959, a wide variety of lasers have been developed with numerous clinical applications in medicine and surgery. Lasers have had a great impact on the surgical approach to both benign and malignant diseases in Otolaryngology‐Head and Neck Surgery, and have enabled the otolaryngologist to manage diseases in the aerodigestive system primarily through an endoscopic approach. We will summarize the physical properties of the currently used lasers in otolaryngology, as well as their clinical applications.

Laser Zentrum Hannover e.V., Hollerithallee 8, 30419 Hannover, GermanyFlat-plate solar collectors are favorable devices to generate heat from the energy of the Sun. The central part of a collector, the solar absorber, is a front-coated aluminum sheet with a copper tube fixed on the back side in order to transport heated liquid. ...

JLA Vol:24 Iss:5 (The numerical analysis and measurements of temperature profile in fat tissue during neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet laser irradiation for laser-assisted lipolysis)
Authors:

Department of Biomedical Engineering, College of Medical Science, Catholic University of Daegu, Hayangeup, Gyongsansi, Gyongbuk 712-702, South KoreaThe purpose of the study is to investigate the temperature profile of fat tissue during neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet laser irradiation (1064, 1320, and 1444 nm wavelengths) for laser-assisted lipolysis. The numerical analysis was performed to assess the wavelength dependence of the temperature distribution in fat tissue. For the internal temperature profile measurements, a cannula was placed in the middle of fat tissue for laser irradiation, and two hypodermic thermocouple needles were placed at 2 and 5 mm...

Ravenswood Hospital Medical Center, Wenske Laser Center, Chicago, IllinoisRecent experimental studies of airborne contaminants found in the carbon dioxide laser plume have raised questions as to the potential danger of serious viral transmission during laser procedures. These concerns originated from a study of the human papilloma wart virus that reported intact strands of the DNA virus in the laser plume during the ablation of verrucae with the carbon dioxide laser. However, the study did not demonstrate the viability of such viral remnants. Such viability is difficult to demonstrate due to the...

AT&T Bell Laboratories ‐ Engineering Research Center, Princeton, New JerseyWe review the resonant ATR spectroscopy as an effective way to enhance the sensitivity of the optical measurements in semiconductor technology. After a short introduction of the basic principles, we consider its application to the non‐destructive characterization of the multilayer structures used in the manufacture of electronics and optoelectronics devices (Resonant ATR technique).
