Rene 195 is a nickel-based superalloy that was used as the advanced tip material of the high pressure turbine blades of aircraft engines because of its excellent oxidation resistance. However, due to poor weldability of this material, it's very difficult to acquire crack free Rene 195 tip through laser powder deposition. In this paper, Laser Net Shape Manufacturing (LNSM) has been applied for Rene 195 deposition. The key processing parameters were correlated with solidification microstructure and optimized process window was obtained for crack free deposition.

Laser powder deposition is essentially a thermal process involving rapid phase changes and high temperature gradients. Thermal stresses generated during rapid cooling have critical impacts on the geometric accuracy and material properties of a laser deposited part. Thermal control is critical for...$28.00

Pulsed laser drilling has recently become of increasing importance to the aerospace industry as a method of creating cooling holes in a variety of high temperature gas turbine engine components. The potential for improved processing speed, accuracy, and reproducibility compared to conventional machining methods make laser drilling attractive from both an economic and product quality standpoint. Presented at ICALEO 2008
An analysis is developed to establish the optimal parameters for precision trepanning using a 200 watt average power fiber laser. Recent test results are also presented to document the mean values and standard deviations of fiber laser trepanned holes for a number of materials, hole diameters, and thicknesses. Analytical constraints are established for each of the following: (1) maintaining sufficient laser irradiance to assure rapid trepanning speed without inducing plasma self-absorption, (2) selecting a laser pulse repetition frequency sufficiently high to maintain a molten met...$28.00

Flash-lamp pumped Nd:YAG lasers are presently used to percussion drill film cooling holes in gas turbine engine components. These lasers are the most popular lasers for cooling hole drilling because their characteristics result in acceptable processing times and microstructures. These lasers are used to drill through a wide range of material types an...$28.00

We report on an experimental study of the pulsed Nd:YAG laser drilling of IN718 for cooling holes in aero-engine components. The holes produced in this study are angled at 30o to the workpiece surface and were mainly produced by a spiral drilling technique. The design of experiment (DOE) using the Taguchi method was employed, and various process parameters such as laser power, drilling speed, assist gas pressure, focal position and a number of drilling passe...$28.00

In a companion paper Precision Trepanning with a Fiber Laser, analytical constraints were developed leading to criteria for optimal trepanning of very precise holes. That paper also includes recent documented test data verifying these calculations. In this paper, we utilize these optimal fiber laser trepanning results to show the potentially substantial benefits that can accrue for relevant aerospace applications. Specifically, the jet engine selected for the Joint Strike Fighter will require over 1.2 million film cooling holes to operate at the elevated temperatures...$28.00
