I have belonged to Prof. Matsunawas laboratory in JWRI since 1981 until his retirement from Osaka University. Prof. A. Matsunawa and I approached our experiments and researches from physical and metallurgical viewpoints in our expert fields to understand the penetration and phenomena in laser welding. The presentation will introduce our fruitful results of plume and keyhole behavior, melt flows and bubbles and pores formation in the molten pool during laser and hybrid welding. He was mos...$28.00

Hybrid Nd:YAG/MAG welding of ultra high strength steel is studied for 1,5 mm thick sheets in I-, T- and overlap joint type configuration. Untreated and zinc-coated steels were compared, causing distinct differences in terms of process stability and welding result. For zinc coating it can be distinguished between domains of trapped zinc layers like in overlap and T-joints and free surface zinc coatings. Wh...$28.00

Nd:YAG laser welding and laser gas tungsten arc (GTA) hybrid welding of the lean duplex stainless steel LDX 2101® (EN 1.4162, UNS S32101) were performed with and without filler wire and nitrogen additions to the shielding gas. The high energy density associated with laser welding of duplex stainless steels can affect the mechanical strength and corrosion resista...$28.00

Laser hybrid welding stands for a process where laser beam and arc are acting in one common process zone. For five years now, this method has been successfully employed for V-type welds and fillet welds by the Meyerwerft -Shipyard. A new research project deals with the problems of vertical down welds a...$28.00

Duplex stainless steels are used in shipbuilding industry to build chemical and oil tanker vessels. The use of these steels is justified to ensure good corrosion behaviour during lifetime. The main limitation of traditional welding processes when welding duplex stainless steel is that the level of distortion reached is very h...$28.00

In this paper a study on some aspects of the weldability of a Magnesium Aluminium alloy to an austenitic stainless steel through a MIG-Laser combined heat source is presented. In particular the effect on the interface between the two alloys due to the heat source position over the welding sheets was investigated. Using either a steel or an aluminium feed wire the combined heat source was positioned in the following working positions the ideal axis from the torch to...$28.00

Metal cored wires are often used in gas metal arc welding to increase productivity. Cored wires can, however, also easily be designed to affect weld metal composition or arc characteristics. Specially formulated metal cored wires, designed for laser hybrid welding, could therefore potentially be used to improve the arc and weld pool characteristics and enhance the process flexibility, robustness and pr...$28.00
