    Presented at ICALEO 2009

We report the use of short pulse laser ablation as a technique for mitigation of near surface stress and damage in SiC. Conventional machining, grinding or polishing of SiC renders a damaged surface layer of depth approximately equal to the final peak-to-valley roughness. This damage layer is comprised of compressive stress and represents a threat to the integrity of the mate...

Dual Mode High Brightness Fiber Laser for Ablation and Drilling of Aerospace Superalloys
    Authors:
Mohammed Naeem, GSI Group, Inc. - Laser Division; Rugby Great Britain
    Steve Keen, -; -
    Presented at ICALEO 2009

Aerospace gas turbines require a large number of small diameter holes (<1mm) to provide cooling in the turbine blades, nozzle guide vanes, combustion chambers and afterburner. Many thousands of holes are introduced in the surface of these components to allow a film of cooling air to flow over the component. Film cooling both extends the life of the component and enables extra performance to be achieved from the engine. A typical modern engine will have ~ 100,000 such holes....
