Laser Cutting and Joining of Wooden Materials: How Both Processes are Determined by the Heat Affected Zone
    Authors:
Stephan Barcikowski, Laser Zentrum Hannover E.V.; Hannover Germany
    Presented at PICALO 2006

Wood and wood-derived materials are the most important materials with a world production of roughly 109 tons per year. However, because of the continuous development of the thermal and mechanical properties of wood materials towards high-tech applications, increasingly precise manufacturing processes have become attractive. In this contribution, the potential of laser cutting as well as laser welding of wooden materials is examined by quality-relevant material and process parameters as well...

    Presented at PICALO 2006

In various industrial applications, for example in the automotive industry, the fabrication of micro-holes in metals is required. One application with the highest requirements is the production of fuel injection nozzles for diesel engines in the automotive industry. More and more smaller holes with well defined geometries are required to reach a more efficient combustion and to reduce the...

    Authors:
Ken Barat, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory; Berkeley CA USA
    Presented at ILSC 2011

This past year we celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the invention of the laser. While we have come a long way with technology safety has lagged in one important area. Still today the most common laser incident is an individual (usually student) performing some type of beam manipulation and not wearing proper protective eyewear and being struck by a stray or direct beam. The LSO and their institution need to spend more time working on changing users safety culture, in order to make a significant impact on the number of laser accidents...

    Authors:

    Presented at ILSC 2011

ICNIRP is about to update the laser exposure limits, which are in parallel adopted by IEC for IEC 60825-1. ANSI is likely to update their exposure limits in a similar form. The exposure limits (and consequently AEL for classification) will be partially raised, allowing higher exposure and emission (wavelength dependence close to 1400 nm, extended spots, multiple pulse reduction), and partially it is necessary to lower the limits (basic limit in the nanosecond range). An overview will be given of the intended changes and th...

    Authors:
Karl Schulmeister, Seibersdorf Laboratories; Seibersdorf Austria

    Presented at ILSC 2011

A computer model to calculate the injury threshold of the cornea of the eye following laser exposure was developed. The model is based on calculation of the laser induced temperature profile and subsequent integration with the Arrhenius integral. The model was validated against all available animal experiment threshold data for wavelengths between 1064 nm and 10,6 µm and pulse durations between 100 µs and 10 s.

    Presented at ILSC 2011

We report on the first of a series of modeling studies examining multiple-pulse damage thresholds in the retina. This effort focuses on near-infrared wavelength (1064nm 1350nm) point source (small spot) thermal damage thresholds, but some general properties of multiple pulse exposures are obtained. We analyze the threshold trends as a function of wavelength, pulse width, inter-pulse spacing, and number of pulses, spanning a large parameter space.
    The rules used for determini...
