Today, Laser Additive Manufacturing (LAM) is typically performed using a single beam with power up to multiple-kilowatts. The associated high heat input and limited process control hampers tight manufacturing tolerances and the applicable material spectrum. This paper highlights the development of Multi-Beam LAM technology to alleviate s...

    Presented at ICALEO 2013

Functional graded materials (FGMs) are a class of composite materials that have a continuous variation of properties from one point to another. FGMs are not new but they could be an approach for eliminating the sharp interface between clad and substrate in the laser cladding process. It is possible to relieve stress concentration appearing in these laminate...

  • ICALEO 2013 Paper #1301 (Indirect Measurement of Keyhole Pressure Oscillations During Laser Deep Penetration Welding)

Indirect Measurement of Keyhole Pressure Oscillations During Laser Deep Penetration Welding
    Authors:
Joerg Volpp, Bias Ggmbh; Bremen Germany
Daniel Freimann, Bias Ggmbh; Bremen Germany
    Presented at ICALEO 2013

The laser deep penetration welding process is highly dynamic. Besides melt pool oscillations the keyhole geometry as well as the pressure inside the keyhole oscillate at high frequencies. Those keyhole oscillations are assumed to support the unwanted process pore formation. Due to limited technological possibilities a direct method for observing the pressure and radius oscillations inside the keyhole is not state of the art.

Based on an existing indirect measuring system ...

    Authors:
Didier Boisselier, IREPA Laser; Illkirch France
Simon Sankare, Irepa Laser; Illkirch France
    Presented at ICALEO 2013

The implementation of the continuous 5-axis configuration can push the limits of the Laser Direct Metal Deposition (LDMD) processes, particularly in terms of complexity of part to build. The inclination of the part growth axis makes it easier to follow the profile of the part. Although continuous 5-axis machining is well known nowadays, LDMD processes require a specific optimization. It depends on many parameters that need the implementation of smooth trajectories in order to ...
