ICALEO 2010 Paper #M601 (Laser Ablation by Optical Vortex Beams )
Laser Ablation by Optical Vortex Beams
Authors:
Takashige Omatsu, Graduate School of Advanced Integration Science, Chiba University; Chiba
Presented at ICALEO 2010
Metal laser ablation using nanosecond optical vortex pulses with orbital angular momentum was performed. Optical vortex was capable of providing energy and cost saving material processing with less debris. Microneedle fabrication on a metal surface based on optical vortex laser ablation was also demonstrated. The resulting needle showed a height of at least 10 m above the target surface and a tip diameter of less than 0.3 m.$28.00

Presented at ICALEO 2010
Lasers with ultraviolet (UV) output offer unique benefits for processing a wide range of materials. In particular, the short wavelength, high energy UV photons experience less diffraction than longer visible or infrared wavelengths, which enables materials processing at higher spatial resolution. In addition, UV lasers micromachine primarily by non-thermal means, thus minimizing the heat affected zone due to processing.
Excimer lasers emitting in the UV region deliver pulse energies scalable up to 1000 mJ ...$28.00
