Presented at ICALEO 2005

This study was performed to obtain a fundamental knowledge of interaction between a laser beam and a laser-induced plume during welding with a YAG or a fiber laser. The interaction was evaluated and interpreted by utilizing the measured power and visualization of a reference beam passing through the laser-induce plume. Especially, the visualization significantly revealed that the laser-induced plume affected the SHG YAG laser and He-Ne laser greatly due to scattering, absorption and refraction phenomena, but hardly influenced the laser with approximately 1,064 nm wavelength.
