Presented at ICALEO 2005

Laser cladding has been succesfully utilised on number of base materials. There is, however, very little data and knowledge available for cladding on cast iron substrates. Cast irons are difficult substrate materials for all welding processes due to its brittle microstructure. Laser cladding can solve the cracking problem indused by high heat input of other welding processes. There is still a great tendency for pore formations due to combustion of graphite. This study presentates results of cladding experiments on various cast iron grades and cladding materials.
