Diode lasers have already become the most important source for applications in material processing where a limited beam quality is sufficient as they are very reliable as well as cost and power efficient. Once the beam quality can be improved to the level of lamp pumped solid state lasers important applications like keyhole welding will be inherited by direct diode lasers. The development of a high brilliance passively cooled laser module with 100 watt output power, out of a 100 micron fiber at a numerical aperture of 0.12 offers unparalleled brilliance and efficiency to power the next generation direct diode laser, the TruDiode. Combining these building blocks high power diode lasers with 1 to 6 kW out of 300 to 600 µm fiber with NA close to 0.1 can be realized. These lasers will be the ideal tool for all keyhole welding applications of the future.
