Optical-phased array (OPA) controls the phase of each array element to make the relative phases constant between the elements. When a linear phase slope is impressed across OPA in one dimension, the random non-mechanical beam steering has been accomplished. OPA not only has the predominance of light-weight, high precise, agile and inertial-free, but also has the advantage of modularity, power scalability by increasing the elements. Based on these, OPA technology can serve for the flexible manufacturing. This paper summarized the significance and the latest progress of this kind of laser source based on OPA technology. The relative basic principle was presented. According to typical materials, the laser source was classified and illustrated in detail involving the key technologies and the latest achievements correspondingly. The technologies are analyzed, compared and evaluated. Finally, the development of the steerable laser source based on OPA applied to flexible laser manufacturing was prospected.
