Your staff will learn basic physics, biological effects, beam hazards, non-beam hazards, and control measures for safe laser environments. After completion of this course, your staff will be able to:
- State what ANSI is
- Recognize the scope of the Z136 standards
- Identify what “LSO” stands for
- Identify properties of laser light
- Define ‘energy’ and ‘power’
- Recognize laser hazard classes
- Recognize behaviors of laser light
- Define the term hazard
- Identify hazards posed to the eyes and skin

A certificate of completion is earned upon passing the short end-of-course quiz; however, this should not be confused with becoming a certified medical laser safety officer (CMLSO), which can only be achieved through the Board of Laser Safety. To become a CMLSO, you must meet specific requirements and pass a comprehensive certification examination that is intended to promote professional advancement. This certification exam is given by the Board of Laser Safety (BLS).
The CMLSO examination is offered by the BLS via paper-and-pencil in the Spring and Fall, and is also available via computer-based testing centers through Prov Inc. For the most up-to-date test dates and locations, visit the BLS website. This course fulfills the laser safety officer training prerequisite for the CMLSO exam. If you are interested in taking this optional CMLSO exam, please visit the BLS to review eligibility requirements. Your staff will learn basic physics, biological effects, beam hazards, non-beam hazards, and control measures for safe laser environments. After completion of this course, your staff will be able to:
- State what ANSI is
- Recognize the scope of the Z136 standards
- Identify what “LSO” stands for
- Identify properties of laser light
- Define ‘energy’ and ‘power’
- Recognize laser hazard classes
- Recognize behaviors of laser light
- Define the term hazard
- Identify hazards posed to the eyes and skin
- Identify six common control measures
