The LIA Mentor Program connects experienced industry leaders with rising professionals to support career growth, knowledge sharing, and community within the laser and electro-optics field.
Why the LIA Mentor Program Exists
The LIA Mentor Program was created to foster meaningful professional relationships, promote skill development, and strengthen the global laser safety and photonics community. Whether you’re seeking guidance or looking to give back, this program provides a structured pathway for growth, leadership, and connection.
Program Goals:
- Support career advancement through personalized guidance
- Promote leadership and knowledge-sharing within the laser industry
- Build a community of engaged professionals across disciplines
- Encourage collaboration across research, manufacturing, academia, and safety
- Provide a space for students and early-career professionals to learn from experts
Code of ConductParticipants are expected to uphold the LIA Mentor Program Code of Conduct, including professional behavior, confidentiality, ethical boundaries, and respectful communication.

How the Program Works
- Step 1: Apply
Mentors and mentees complete a brief application detailing their experience, interests, and goals.
- Step 2: Matching by LIA Staff
LIA staff thoughtfully match mentors and mentees based on:
- Industry sector
- Experience level
- Career goals
- Technical interests
- Preferred communication style
- Availability (Space is limited)- Step 3: Connect & Collaborate
Pairs set up their own virtual meetings at a frequency that works for both parties.
- Step 4: Provide Feedback
After completing the 3 month mentorship program, we ask that you complete a survey regarding your experience and provide any feedback that you feel may be helpful in the future development of the program.
- Step 5: Time Commitment
This program is designed to be flexible.
Most mentors and mentees meet:
1-2 times per month,
For 30-60 minutes,
Over a 3 month timeframe
Expectations & Responsibilities
Mentors
Mentors provide guidance, share career insights, offer constructive feedback, and support professional growth. Mentors are expected to provide genuine support and industry knowledge.
Mentees
Mentees drive the relationship by scheduling meetings, coming prepared with questions/topics (or structure their meetings based on LIA suggested prompts), and taking an active role in their development. Mentees should be open to feedback, professional, and committed to the process.

Eligibility Requirements
Participation in the LIA Mentor Program is open to active LIA members who are committed to professional growth, knowledge sharing, and respectful engagement.

All mentors and mentees must:
Be an active LIA member
Agree to abide by the LIA Mentor Program Code of Conduct
Be willing and able to meet virtually at mutually agreed-upon times
Commit to respectful, professional, and constructive participationNot yet a member?

Become an LIA Member- Mentor Eligibility
Mentors should have demonstrated experience in the laser industry and a desire to support the next generation of professionals.
Recommended qualifications include:
- Mid-career to senior-level experience in the laser industry (typically 7+ years)
- Professional experience in areas such as laser applications, safety, research, manufacturing, education, or leadership
- Willingness to share insights, provide guidance, and offer constructive feedback
- Ability to commit time and engage consistently with a mentee
Note: Industry experience may come from a variety of paths, including technical, academic, research, or leadership roles.
- Mentee Eligibility
Mentees are individuals seeking guidance, insight, and professional development within the laser industry.
Recommended qualifications include:
- Students, early-career, or emerging professionals (typically 0–7 years of experience)
- Interest in learning about career pathways, technical development, or industry best practices
- Willingness to take initiative in scheduling meetings and setting discussion topics
- Openness to feedback and active engagement in the mentoring relationship
- Dual Participation
Some members may qualify as both a mentor and a mentee, depending on their experience, goals, and areas of interest. Applicants will have the opportunity to indicate their preferred role(s) during the application process.
