    Laser Patterned Nonwovens
    Authors:
Faith Kane, Loughborough University, School of Art and Design; Loughborough. Leicestershire Great Britain
John Tyler, Loughborough University (presenter not author); -
    Presented at ICALEO 2009

Nonwovens are growing in significance within the design sector. They are finding increasing application as wall coverings, upholstery and furnishing fabrics. The potential to laser cut and mark nonwovens for design purposes adds to their appeal within the sector. An example of this is Mercedes-Benz use of laser engraved Alcantara®, which is a synthetic leather constructed using nonwoven technologies. This paper reports on techniques used to engineer non...

    Presented at ICALEO 2009

The laser brazing of steel with copper solder is widely established in industrial manufacturing. The reason are process advantages as a low working temperature and thus the low thermal distortion. In addition, the quality of the joint regarding surface appearance, joint strength and impermeability are fully ensured. The major obstacle for a wide industrial spreading of laser brazi...

    Presented at ICALEO 2009

Aerospace gas turbines require a large number of small diameter holes (<1mm) to provide cooling in the turbine blades, nozzle guide vanes, combustion chambers and afterburner. Many thousands of holes are introduced in the surface of these components to allow a film of cooling air to flow over the component. Film cooling both extends the life of the component and enables extra performance to be achieved from the engine. A typical modern engine will have ~ 100,000 such holes....
