    Authors:
C.V. Robino, Sandia National Laboratory; Albuquerque NM USA
J.T. Norris, Sandia National Laboratories; Albquerque NM USA
    Presented at ICALEO 2008

A method is currently being developed to temporally characterize the energy absorption in laser beam spot welds. As a spot weld is created, absorption of laser energy changes with the condition of the weld (initial melting conduction keyhole). By relating the known pulse energy to the energy scattered during welding, a time resolved description of energy absorption can be determined. The method discussed uses a gold plated i...

    Laser Concrete Ablation Scaling Effects
    Authors:
D.O. Maccallum, Sandia National Laboratories; Albuquerque NM USA
J.T. Norris, Sandia National Laboratories; Albuquerque NM USA
    Presented at ICALEO 2008

Surface scabbling of concrete by laser processing has been demonstrated in the literature for large-area problems (~50 mm wide x 10 deep) using physically large, high-power consumption, multi-kW CW laser systems. With large spot diameters (~50 mm) and low power densities (~ 300 W/cm2), large volume thermal stresses are induced which promote concrete cracking. This process is highly power-density and heat-input (J/m) dependent. Too high power densities cause melting and generate pot...

This work presents the technique suitable for the determination of the linear electro-optic effect tensor components in crystal materials of any symmetry. The method is based on the Michelson interferometer where the sample being studied is set into the one of its arms to measure the electro-induced changes of the optical path. We describe in detai...

    Authors:
Dongkyun Lee, The University of Michigan; Ann Arbor MI USA
Elijah Kannatey-Asibu Jr, The University of Michigan; Ann Arbor MI USA
    Presented at ICALEO 2008

In this study, the feasibility of laser shock peening using ultrafast laser pulses was experimentally investigated. A top coating of zinc with a water confining layer was applied in the investigation. The zinc coating was used for the thermo-protective effect, and also for in-situ investigation on the feasibility of laser microwelding using femtosecond laser pulses. A high numerical aperture aspheric lens w...

Sputter deposition was used to deposit amorphous, 1μm thick, Ti-rich NiTi films on silicon substrates which were annealed at various times and temperatures to alter their microstructure. The effects of heat treatments on the shape memory and mechanical properties of the films were analysed through temperature dependent x-ray diffraction and nanoindentation. These heat treatments were shown to affect th...
